The side effects of cialis

Cialis (Tadalfil) is an orally administered drug used for treating men suffering from erectile dysfunction (ED). The highly popular drug has been approved by FDA and has been available by prescription since 2003.

Marketed world-wide by Lilly ICOS, Cialis is available as film-coated, almond-shaped tablets containing 2.5, 5, 10, or 20 mg of tadalafil. Unlike other impotence treatments, Cialis pills work faster and longer. Cialis starts working in as little as 30 minutes and lasts as long as 36 hours. This is the reason the French fondly refer to Cialis as the 'weekend pill'. Today, men with ED also have the option to take low dosage ‘Cialis Once A Day Pills’ that offer freedom and flexibility to enjoy sexual activity at the ‘right’ moment without much planning.

What are the side effects of Cialis?

Like many other medicines, Cialis is not free from side effects either. It is imperative that users are aware of the side effects of Cialis. It should be noted that as with all prescription medications, Cialis side effects can affect individuals in different ways. It is possible that you may not experience any of the common and rarely noticed Cialis side effects as discussed here. Please consult a doctor if you get a Cialis side effect that bothers you or does not go away.

Cialis has been used in approximately 15,000 men participating in clinical trials and over 8 million men worldwide. Most common Cialis side effects are headache, indigestion, back pain, muscle aches, flushing, and stuffy or runny nose. These Cialis side effects usually go away after a few hours and should not be the cause of any concern. Back pain and muscle aches can occur 12 to 24 hours after taking the drug, and the symptom usually disappears after 48 hours.

Rarely noticed Cialis Side Effects

As with any ED (erectile dysfunction) tablet, in rare events use of Cialis may cause painful and prolonged erections lasting more than four hours (known as priapism). If such a situation occurs, seek immediate medical attention to avoid permanent problems to the penis.

Very rarely, Cialis has been found to cause sudden decrease or loss of vision or hearing (sometimes with ringing in the ears and dizziness). Whether, Cialis is responsible for this is not yet proven. If you have a sudden decrease or loss of vision or hearing, stop taking Cialis, and call your doctor right away.

Serious allergic reactions to Cialis are unlikely, but seek immediate medical attention if it occurs. Symptoms of a serious allergic reaction could include rash, itching, unusual swelling, severe dizziness, trouble breathing. If you notice other effects not listed above, do contact your doctor or pharmacist.

Drug Interactions

Cialis should not be used with the following medications because very serious (possibly fatal) interactions may occur:

  • Since PDE5 inhibitors such as Cialis may cause transiently low blood pressure (hypotension), organic nitrates should not be taken for at least 48 hours after taking the last dose of tadalafil. Using organic nitrites (such as the sex drug amyl nitrite) within this timeframe may increase the risk of life-threatening hypotension. Since people who have taken Cialis within the past 48 hours cannot take organic nitrates to relieve angina (such as glyceryl trinitrate spray), these patients should seek immediate medical attention if they experience anginal chest pain. In the event of a medical emergency, paramedics and medical personnel should be notified of any recent doses of tadalafil.
  • Use of Cialis with alpha blockers, sometimes prescribed for prostate problems or high blood pressure, is not recommended. If Cialis is taken with certain alpha blockers, your blood pressure could suddenly drop. You could get dizzy or faint
  • Use of Cialis with other treatments for erectile dysfunction is not recommended, as the safety of such combinations has not yet been established.

The following medicines may increase the blood level of tadalafil, which could increase the risk of Cialis side effects:

  • Antifungal medicines ketoconazole and itraconazole
  • Antibiotic medicines clarithromycin and erythromycin
  • HIV protease inhibitors ritonavir and saquinavir.

Precautions

Cialis is a prescription only medicine NOT to be used by everyone. Please keep following precautions in mind to avoid Cialis side effects:

  • Discuss about all your medical conditions with your doctor and ask if you are healthy enough for sexual activity. This is because sexual activity can put an extra strain on your heart, especially if your heart is already weak from a heart attack or heart disease
  • Tell your doctor if you are allergic to Cialis or any of its ingredients. The active ingredient in Cialis is called Tadalafil. Do not take Cialis if you are allergic to it.
  • Before taking Cialis it is important to tell your doctor or pharmacist about your medical history, especially if you have one of the following: penis conditions, history of priapism, sickle cell anemia, blood system cancers, eye problems, kidney disease, liver disease, bleeding disorders, active stomach ulcers, heart problems, recent stroke within past 6 months, very high or low blood pressure.
  • Don't drink alcohol in excess (to a level of intoxication) with Cialis, as this may increase your chances of getting dizzy or lowering your blood pressure.
  • Cialis does not protect against sexually transmitted diseases, including HIV.
  • Keep Cialis and all medicines out of the reach of children.
