Scientists link genes to hair loss

Scientists have discovered a number of genes that can directly cause hair loss. The 8 genes are believed to contribute to alopecia areata, a condition that typically causes hair to fall out in patches, and occasionally can lead to complete baldness.

Getting under the skin of things

According to the National Alopecia Areata Foundation, around 5.3 million Americans suffer from the skin disease.

Although the disorder affects so many Americans, there is not an active treatment to combat alopecia areata.
