Acomplia (Rimonabant) and the Dangers of its Generic Form

04 Oct, 2007 | Obesity

Acomplia has quickly established itself as the most popular anti-obesity drug available today, since its much anticipated release in June, 2006. Its manufacturer, the French pharmaceutical company Sanofi Aventis, still holds the patent for Acomplia meaning that there should be no legal generic version available today on the western market. However this has not stopped a number of well known pharmacies from developing countries producing what they are claiming is a generic version of Rimonabant. These generics are quickly raising a series of alarming safety questions for those looking to buy Acomplia online.

Is it safe to buy Acomplia in generic form?

The safety and effectiveness of any generic drug are points worth questioning but none more so than the generic version of Acomplia. The patent protection that Sanofi Aventis holds has many years left to run however these companies are taking the position that this patent does not apply to their respective countries, which includes India, Thailand and China. This is therefore allowing them to produce these generic versions of Acomplia.

Thanks to these copies, consumers who are looking to buy Acomplia are now faced with more authenticity worries. The producers of generic forms of Acomplia do not have to adhere to the same strict health and safety rules as companies such as Sanofi-Aventis which could easily result in lower quality pills being produced. No medical authority/body governs these pharmaceutical companies and no information has been released explaining how their active ingredient is synthesized. Another point of interest is how many other additional inactive ingredients are included which could alter its effectiveness as a weight-loss drug, along with the side effects produced. A full list of side effects for genuine Rimonabant can found on the AtlanticDrugs.com Acomplia page.

The above mentioned points do not help to bring reassurance to those interested in generic Acomplia. The only guaranteed method of proving their effectiveness and safety would be to place them in head-to-head clinical trials against the branded version.

Acomplia Clinical Trials

Sanofi Aventis has released detailed results from its clinical trials providing evidence in support of the effectiveness for branded Acomplia. Over 6,600 overweight or obese patients enrolled in the Rimonabant In Obesity (RIO) program exploring the effect of Acomplia on obesity management.

The most relevant results drawn from the two year North American section of this study include patients on the 20mg dose of Acomplia lost significantly higher amount of there body weight compared to the lower-dosage and the placebo group.

On average, the researchers reported that the 20mg Acomplia group reduced their waste circumference by an average of 3.1inches, compared to 1.5 inches for the control group. The full results from the RIO study can be found on the www.sanofi-aventis.us website.

As soon as any clinical trial results become available from those producing generic Acomplia, we will of course keep you updated. For now, all of these negative points lead to one alarming conclusion; those who buy Acomplia in its generic form, do so at there own risk.
