What is Valtrex?Valtrex is an anti-viral drug containing the active ingredient valaciclovir and is used to treat genital herpes, shingles and cold sores. It helps to slow down the spread of the symptoms, giving your bodies natural defenses a chance to fight off the infection. Valtrex medication is available in 500mg tablets.
Valtrex medication is not a cure for the herpes virus but helps to reduce the infection and the pain associated with them. Valtrex is sometimes prescribed for other uses although you should speak to your physician/doctor about this.

How does Valtrex work?
Valtrex medication contains the active ingredient ‘valaciclovir’ which works by blocking viral enzyme called DNA polymerase. The herpes viruses (including herpes simplex 1 & 2, varicella zoster and herpes varicella) requires the DNA polymerase enzyme to copy their genetic material from one cell to another, hence by blocking the enzyme it stops the infection from spreading and multiplying. This allows the bodies’ immune system to deal with it much quicker than it would naturally. Valtrex medication can also decrease the risk of passing genital herpes to your sexual partner.
What are the side effects of Valtrex?
Valtrex does have some possible side effects; however, as with all prescription medication these will vary from person to person. Because a side effect is stated here, it does not guarantee it will occur during the course of the medicine:
- Headache
- Abdominal Pain
- Diarrhea
- Confusion
- Decreased kidney function
- Dizziness
- Nausea and vomiting
- Disturbances of liver function
If you feel that any of these side effects become particularly bothersome or you experience a side effect with Valtrex that seems unusual, you should consult your doctor immediately.
